How to use the worksheet generator

1. Pick your tables. Tap any number from 1 to 12. Choose a single table to drill it, or several to mix them together. Select all builds a sheet from the full 1–12 range, and Facts up to caps how far the multipliers go if your class is only partway through a table.
2. Set the number of questions. Anywhere from 10 to 30. Fewer questions means larger print and more room to write, which suits younger children.
3. Choose the order. In order gives each table its own column with the multipliers counting up. Mixed up shuffles everything together.
4. Choose your paper and ink. A4 or US Letter, colour or black & white. The sheet is laid out for the size you pick, so nothing is scaled or clipped at the printer.
5. Printing for a class? Set how many sheets you need, decide what changes from one copy to the next, paste your class list if you want names printed, and tick the answer key. The whole set arrives as one PDF.

What makes these worksheets different

Every sheet is a new one. Static worksheet packs run out, and children start recognising the page instead of recalling the answer. Here the questions reshuffle on every download, so you can hand out a different sheet each day — or give the child sitting next to yours a different one.

Each table keeps its own column. In In order mode the questions fill downwards, so the 3 times table sits in one column, the 6 in the next and the 9 in the third. It reads the way a child has been learning the tables, and it is much faster to mark: you run your eye down a column instead of zig-zagging across rows.

Black & white saves ink. Running thirty colour copies through a school printer is expensive. The black & white setting swaps every colour for crisp greyscale and slims the header bar, so a class set costs a fraction to print and still looks tidy.

For teachers: printing a class set

Thirty sheets, one PDF, one click. Step 5 turns the generator into a class printer. Choose how many sheets you need — up to 35 — and the download button hands back a single file with one worksheet per page, instead of making you generate and save them one at a time. The button counts the sheets off as it builds them.

You decide what changes from one copy to the next. That choice is the whole difference between thirty copies and thirty worksheets:

• Nothing — identical copies. Every child gets the same questions and one answer key marks the lot. This is what you want when the class is working through the same thing together.
• The questions — a different sheet each. Same tables, same number of questions, different sums, so copying a neighbour gets a child nowhere. Each sheet has its own answers, and the key prints them in sheet order.
• The difficulty — three ability levels. Easier, standard and harder sheets are dealt out in turn rather than in blocks, so handing out the pile does not give one level a run of ten. Every sheet carries the same heading, the same layout and the same number of questions, so no child can tell which level they were given.

The levels do not have to be an even third each. Real classes are not split in three. Type the numbers you actually need — 6 easier, 18 standard, 6 harder — and the set size follows the total. A band set to zero simply does not appear, so two levels work as well as three.

Paste your class list and the names print themselves. One name per line. The set becomes one sheet per name, each child’s name is printed on the Name line, and the answer key is headed by name instead of by sheet number — so marking is a matter of putting the two side by side. The names are only ever held in your own browser: nothing is uploaded, saved or sent anywhere.

Only the facts you have covered. A class two weeks into the 4 times table does not need 4 × 11 yet. Facts up to in step 1 caps the multiplier, so you can ask for 1 × 4 through 6 × 4 and nothing beyond. The sheet says so in its heading, and the setting works in both question orders.

Answers when you want them. Tick Add an answer key and the answers arrive as extra pages at the end of the same PDF. The key packs several worksheets onto each page, so a set of thirty comes with about five key pages rather than thirty — and if every copy is identical, one small block marks the whole class.

Going straight to the printer? Print now sends the whole set to your printer without building a PDF first, which is noticeably quicker for a large set. Choose Save as PDF in the print dialog if you want the file after all.

Which settings should I choose?

Still learning a table? Choose that single table, 12 questions and In order. You will get exactly 1 × 7 through 12 × 7 — the table as your child has been reciting it. If they are only partway through, drop Facts up to to match.

Checking whether it has stuck? Choose the same table with 20 to 30 questions and Mixed up. Recalling facts out of sequence is much harder than reciting them in order, and it is what the UK Multiplication Tables Check asks children to do.

Revising several tables? Pick three or four related tables, set 24 to 30 questions and use Mixed up. Three tables across 21 questions gives a tidy sheet with one table per column.

Handing out to a whole class? Paste your class list so every sheet comes out named, choose The questions so no two children have the same paper, tick the answer key, and print in black & white.

Is the multiplication worksheet generator free?

Yes. Every worksheet is completely free, there is no sign-up, and there is no limit on how many you create or download.

Can I print a worksheet for every child in the class?

Yes. Set the sheet count in step 5 to anything up to 35 and the download button builds one PDF with a worksheet on every page, ready to send to the printer in a single job.

Can every child get a different worksheet?

Yes. Choose The questions as what changes from one copy to the next, and every sheet in the set carries a different set of sums drawn from the same tables. Copying a neighbour gets a child nowhere, and the sheets still look identical at a glance.

Can I give different children different levels?

Yes. Choose The difficulty and the set is built from three bands — easier, standard and harder — dealt out in turn so the pile is not sorted by level. Every sheet has the same heading, layout and number of questions, so no child can tell which band they were handed.

Can I decide how many of each level?

Yes. Type the number you want in each of the three boxes and the size of the set follows the total, so a class that needs 6 easier, 18 standard and 6 harder gets exactly that. Set a band to zero and it is left out altogether.

Can I print each child’s name on their sheet?

Yes. Tick Print each child’s name and paste your class list, one name per line. You get one sheet per name with the name printed on the Name line, and the answer key is headed by name too. The list never leaves your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored.

Do the worksheets come with an answer sheet?

Yes, if you want one. Tick Add an answer key and the answers print as extra pages at the end of the PDF, in the same order the worksheets come in. Several worksheets fit on each key page, so a class set does not double the paper.

How do I limit the questions to the facts we have covered?

Use Facts up to in step 1. It caps the multiplier, so a class six facts into the 4 times table can be given 1 × 4 up to 6 × 4 and nothing harder. The worksheet heading says which range it covers.

What size are the worksheets?

One page each, on A4 or US Letter — whichever you choose in step 4. The sheet is laid out for the size you pick and the PDF is made in that size, so it prints at full size with no scaling or clipping.

Can I use these worksheets in my classroom?

Yes. Teachers, tutors and parents are welcome to print and hand out as many copies as they need.

Which times tables does it cover?

Every table from 1 to 12, with multipliers from 1 to 12 — so anything from 1 × 1 up to 12 × 12.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The generator runs in any modern browser and the PDF saves to your device, though you will of course need a printer to put the sheet in front of a child.
