About the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment introduced by the UK government to ensure that pupils in Year 4 (aged 8–9) have a strong grasp of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. The check is designed to improve mathematical fluency and confidence, as quick recall of times tables is a vital skill for tackling more advanced math concepts, including fractions, division, and algebra. It consists of a short, computer-based test where students answer 25 questions, with six seconds allocated for each question.

The MTC is not about putting pressure on students but helping them build a solid foundation for future learning. The test focuses on assessing pupils’ ability to recall multiplication facts quickly and accurately. This is a key milestone in the national curriculum, as being fluent in times tables can significantly boost problem-solving skills and overall numeracy.

To help students prepare, we provide interactive online practice tools tailored to the MTC format. These tools mimic the real test experience, offering timed questions and instant feedback to help learners improve their speed and accuracy. By practicing in a stress-free environment, pupils can build their confidence, track their progress, and excel in the actual assessment. Start practicing today to make mastering multiplication both effective and enjoyable!
